Avoiding GM Burnout: 3 Simple Shifts 🎲

How to Prevent GM Burnout in TTRPGs

Running a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) can be one of the most rewarding experiences at the table. But for many Game Masters, the excitement can also turn into exhaustion. Hours of prep, the pressure to keep every session engaging, and the responsibility of managing the group can leave you feeling drained. Burnout is real—but it doesn’t have to run the table.

Here are three simple shifts that can help you avoid GM burnout and keep your games sustainable:

Creativity ✨

You don’t need to plan every detail. Invite your players into the creative process by co-building the story and world. When players share narrative responsibility, it reduces your prep load and makes the story more surprising and collaborative.

Relationships 🤝

Your role as GM doesn’t mean you carry everything alone. Take time to check in with your players, both in and out of game. Open communication builds trust, creates a sense of shared ownership, and ensures everyone feels responsible for the table’s success.

Growth 🌱

It’s natural for your GM style to evolve. Maybe that means shortening sessions, shifting systems, or experimenting with less prep-heavy formats. Growth is about finding a balance that protects your energy while keeping the fun alive for everyone.

Burnout doesn’t mean you’re a “bad GM”—it’s simply a sign that you may need to adjust how you play and facilitate. By focusing on creativity, relationships, and growth, you can make your role as GM more sustainable and rewarding.

Remember: when the GM thrives, the table thrives.
