Storytelling as a Tool in Trauma-Informed Therapy

In therapy, we often look for ways to help clients connect, regulate, and grow. One of the oldest tools we have for this isn’t new at all—it’s storytelling.

When we bring storytelling into trauma-informed care, it does more than entertain. Storytelling creates opportunities for clients to practice the skills they need most, in a way that feels safe and engaging.

Here are three ways storytelling in tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) can strengthen therapy groups:

Creativity 🎨

Storytelling gives clients a safe way to imagine, experiment, and reframe their experiences. Creativity helps foster flexibility, adaptability, and resilience, skills that are essential for healing.

Attachment 🤝

Co-creating a narrative builds trust, safety, and collaboration within the group. Just like the therapeutic alliance, these connections provide a foundation for growth and recovery.

Competency 🛡️

Facing challenges in-game helps clients practice problem-solving, decision-making, and confidence. These moments of mastery within the story can translate into real-life strengths and coping skills.

Storytelling is more than a metaphor, it’s a pathway to growth, resilience, and healing. When integrated into therapy groups through trauma-informed TTRPGs, it becomes a powerful way for clients to explore, connect, and thrive.
